First, I’m going to start off with a little background of where the terms girl boss and a boss lady came from, then give you some examples of some pretty remarkable women, and then you can head on to read the 14 boss lady habits that all have great recommendations to change your life!
Where did Girl boss & boss lady come from?
Here’s the Urban Dictionary’s initial definition of the term girl boss…
Girlboss (verb) to make something or someone appear as a feminist idol or inspiration for profit, despite the numerous flaws of the person.
However, through further investigation, it’s also revealed that the true term of “Girl boss” actually came from a savvy businesswoman (which we will discuss below) and it’s about someone who dreams big and is willing to work hard for those goals no matter who they are and where they came from.
Boss lady or girl boss, however you want to out it, is a way to describe this savvy businesswoman.
Both of these terms are all about being able to dream big, go after those dreams with fierce determination while also working hard to reach those goals.
I have two examples for you below and then I will reveal 14 boss lady habits to empower your life!
A boss lady and female empowerment example #1.
The original girl boss term was created in 2014 by Sophia Amoruso founder of Nasty Gal.
Nasty Gal was and still is an online retailer that initially launched on eBay.
The phrase girl boss was popularized in 2014 to help propel her brand and company into the limelight… and it worked!
In 2017, Nasty Gal had grossed revenue of more than $100M and was very well-known worldwide.
Since girl boss was very relatable and was not just for Sophia, it became a famous brand and worldwide term!
Girl boss was a model for female entrepreneurs rising, and it quickly became a way to protest patriarchy.
Nowadays, any woman can become a girl boss and boss lady.
And being a boss lady symbolizes a community of women eager to achieve their own personal power and success while not sacrificing their femininity and drive.
A boss lady and female empowerment example #2.
All around the world, there are many inspiring female boss ladies. One such woman is Emma Watson, an activist, and actress since she was just seven years old.
From playing Hermione in Harry Potter to taking on the role as Belle for Disney’s live-action Beauty and The Beast remake, her passion shines through each character she portrays–and now it seems that girl power does too!
In addition to being a successful UN Women Goodwill Ambassador (a position which someone from outside of government had never before held), Ms. Watson also started her own gender equality movement: HeForShe.
In 2014, millions of people joined her together online with one goal in mind: to achieve equal rights between men and women so both can have complete freedom without prejudice or discrimination.
This is a true testament to what a girl boss and boss lady is. It’s about female empowerment and the impact it can have on many around the world.
What does Girl Boss mean for you?
Another great example about being a boss lady is from Sophia Amoruso founder and CEO of Nasty Gal in which she stated “confidence is one of the most attractive characteristics a woman can possess” in her TEDx talk about girl bosses.
“A girl boss is someone who is confident in her abilities and pursues her dreams with confidence”.
Now, what does this mean for you?
Well, women especially now, must take control of their lives and do what they need to do in order to achieve their goals.
It’s essential that they are their own person and not told by others how to look, behave, and act.
Therefore, being a girl boss is all about having the courage to let go of what other people expect or want from you because a boss lady is confident and knows where she stands in the world.
Plus, besides being fierce, you must always be your own personal boss in order to be a girl boss or boss lady, and then your destiny is yours!
Now let’s uncover these 14 boss lady habits that you should develop now.
After all, the world needs more #girlpower and boss ladies like yourself!
14 BossLady habits to develop for ultimate success
Girl Boss habit 1: Wake Up Ready.
“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy, and wise.” This statement couldn’t be more true in the modern world. If you want success in your life; it all starts with waking up ready.
If you’re not making the most out of your mornings you’re doing yourself a disservice if you want to live life on your own terms.
Wake up ready by setting out clothes from the night before so they’re there for you when needed. Have breakfast/coffee prepared if time permits- this will save you some valuable morning moments just sitting around idly.
Finally, consider showering before bed. Doing so will save you loads of time when getting ready in the morning.

Girl Boss habit 2: Make wellness your #1 priority.
In order to sustain and maintain the momentum you need to pursue your personal goals relentlessly, it is important that your health always comes first.
When there’s an imbalance between work, health, and wellness, it can get in the way of a overall well-rounded lifestyle, and in the end, you might find yourself feeling burned out.
But it doesn’t have to be hard work to stay healthy! The solution? Consistently make your health and wellness your number one priority.
Get more sleep, eat healthier foods and always make sure you are drinking water regularly throughout the day. Doing all of these will help decrease any feelings of overwhelm at your desk and will help you think more clearly when pursuing your dreams.

Girl Boss habit 3: Communicate effectively.
No matter what you do for a living, having good communication skills in the corporate world is going to be vital in any business you undertake.
When we communicate with others, it brings us closer together and helps to form a stronger bond of trust between one another.
Jenny Galluzzo co-founded The Second Shift. This company is on a mission for women to have a better workplace. She believes female founders should be held to a higher standard and communication is key to get there.
Healthy communication not only enhances the quality work that’s trying to be accomplished but also strengthens our relationships, which can lead to more positive opportunities for future success!
Whether you’re communicating through email, zoom, or face-to-face conversations, make sure everyone involved has all the information they need, this way it will help make your time go much smoother.
Girl Boss habit 4: Plan your day.
Imagine what the day will be like before you even get out of bed–what’s on your agenda for that particular day, and how can you make sure you prioritize your time right in order to have a fulfilling day ahead.
The future is not set in stone; it changes minute by minute! Planning ahead gives us more flexibility during stressful moments because we are aware of our schedules from the start.

Girl Boss habit 5: Overcome barriers.
Do not let setbacks stop you from improving your business and yourself.
Negative opinions and other people’s thoughts and opinions should not stop you from reaching your goals. It doesn’t matter if your plan failed, former employees told you your idea isn’t worth it or your investment didn’t pan out, just get over it.
The hard truth is that almost all successful people have failed at one point or another and what you do know for sure now is that all barriers can be overcome!
Comparing where you are and where you want to be and actually acting on it will help you feel more like a boss lady throughout your day to day life.
Girl Boss habit 6: Stay Fueled.
To start off your morning with the best energy like the girl boss you, you must incorporate a healthy breakfast routine.
This great morning habit will not only help you stay extra energized and happy all day long — which will make it easier for you to tackle tasks with ease– but most girl bosses are so smart when it comes to designing their own morning routine because it allows them the time and space in order to stay well-nourished.
Whether this means preparing some oatmeal the night before or having a green-filled smoothie before heading out for your day’s tasks.
Find something easy-to-prepare that will give you the long-lasting energy you need without any extra brainpower needed in the morning.
Girl Boss habit 7: Get & Stay organized.
Let’s assume most small business owners and girl bosses usually are already tidy people.
They know where everything is, and that helps them stay on track with meeting their most demanding goals and deadlines no matter what comes up in life or at work!
Here are a few ways to better help you stay organized:
- Try focusing on one little section each day (your kitchen table for example) to keep organized.
- The next day clean your desk/work area, closet, car, etc.
- Take 10 minutes each day where you can make a big difference in the section you choose and how they can be more functional.
- Always pick something simple to organize to start off with before tackling anything else that’s intimidating!

Girl Boss habit 8: Make room for fitness.
You can be at the top of your game in every aspect, but if you’re not exercising regularly then everything grinds to a halt. You might think that it’s only fitness junkies who need regular exercise because they have personal trainers or are training for some marathon-type event – nope!
Exercise is key to maintaining our energy levels while also boosting them so we don’t get overwhelmed by life when things start piling upon us. The solution? Simple: combine strength training with cardiovascular workouts (doing both will maximize results).

Girl Boss habit 9: Get good rest.
One of the most important things for a human to survive is good sleep! You need 7-8 hours nightly because if you’re sleeping well, your body can function properly.
Try going to bed early or waking up early before work starts so that you have time in the day to do what needs to be done.
Your blood pressure will be lower and your immune system will be stronger when it’s working as intended without interference from lack of restful sleep; also try putting away electronics an hour or two before bedtime– they often emit blue light which disturbs our natural circadian rhythms, making us feel less sleepy at night (the same goes with watching TV).
It may sound cliche but drink some bedtime tea too: some decaf teas contain l-theanine which is perfect for a good night’s rest.
Girl Boss habit 10: Reduce social media usage.
The biggest culprit that causes procrastination over anything else these days is the mobile phone! It’s basically the gateway to start procrastination and if you’re overusing it, it can get in your way of being productive.
So unless your social media usage helps with getting closer to what you want for yourself (like a job or career), then try limiting how much time you spend on your phone.
If you need help, try to limit it (as often as possible) by setting a timer on yourself or unsubscribing from those needless notifications.

Girl Boss habit 11: Make your bed.
A great way to set yourself up for another day of success is by making your bed.
Once you’re done, it will make the rest of the house seem that much cleaner and more in order because nothing seems worse than coming home from a long workday or school day only to find out someone didn’t take care of their own room first!
Plus, when you come back after being away all day, not having an already-made bed may tempt you into crawling right back under those sheets during your downtime instead of completing other essential tasks on your list like organizing closets or preparing for tomorrow’s morning breakfast.
Girl Boss habit 12: Adopt a minimalist lifestyle.
Minimalism is a lifestyle choice that many people are turning to for its low-maintenance and stress-relieving benefits.
Plus, in today’s fast-paced society, minimizing possessions can be as therapeutic as it is practical – you won’t have to worry about cleaning up after or looking at messes all day long!
It’s also important to clear out the clutter in our lives because it forces us to focus on what really matters.
Clutter is like mental stress – unneeded items at home or in your car will just make you feel cluttered and overwhelmed without adding any real joy to life.
That’s why girl bosses all find themselves needing a good purge every few months, so their space feels fresh again!

Girl Boss habit 13: Make lists (lots of them!).
One of the best habits you can cultivate as a girl boss is list-taking because trying to remember every little thing that needs doing could be impossible.
To get into this habit, write down everything that comes to your mind (even things you think won’t be important), and take note of anything on your task checklist which pops up in conversation with others or new ideas about what could make for an interesting side hustle.
The most crucial part: don’t stop making lists! This will help keep track of goals from small to large.
Girl Boss habit 14: Assume your Girl Boss Power.
One last thing. Have you ever felt like your true potential is being held back by something?
You deserve to be proud of who you are, and the best thing for yourself–and others around you–is to express that! So when tackling new opportunities or challenges in life, remember one very important rule: never stop striving and know you are powerful!
A true girl boss doesn’t just have a goal; she’s someone with the power over her own decision-making process. She may not always succeed but that’s okay—it only means it’s time for another attempt at conquering what has been set out in front of her.
Sometimes in life, it can feel as though we’ve got limitations on how far our ambitions will take us – so make sure to think about these things ahead of time, act accordingly, and assume the power of your own unique inner girl boss today!
