What is a mood?

According to this study, there are at least seven different hormones in our body that regulate our moods.

They do so by affecting the output of chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which work together with other cells throughout the brain – influencing everything from our sleep patterns all way down to how much energy we have when we are feeling happy or sad.

What’s more, their influence can change without any notice; for example, someone might feel happy after eating something, but not sad. Or vice versa, depending on how the food affected them.

And you might be thinking, so…

Why am I always in a mood? Or moody?

If someone is saying you are moody or always in a mood, for starters there is no such thing as a single mood.

The way you feel at any given moment or what’s going on in your life can change from moment to moment.

Sometimes these moods can change drastically within minutes or hours, other times, small events will have significant impacts later down the line if left unchecked.

Due to the many various things happening during those moments (some good and some bad), these events do shape our outlooks over time.

And since we all have minds capable of feeling emotion whether happy, sad, tired, etcetera; there isn’t any correct answer when describing a mood.

The next best thing is to understand what a mood swing is…

What is a mood swing?

When your emotional state changes dramatically, from sad to happy or happy to sad, that is called a mood swing.

Mood changes happen, and it’s a very natural process for us human beings to feel whether it is in our head or set off by the people around us.

Everybody experiences mood swings from time to time.

However, depending on the individual personality traits of each person and their ability to cope with stressful situations at work/home, etc., some moods may be more noticeable than others.

For instance, it’s common for people to experience fluctuations in their moods because it can be attributed to many factors like stress or anxiety.

But a mood swing, which is a mood that can change very quickly from depressed to happy, doesn’t have to be confined only to one event.

Other external events can also impact how someone feels at any given moment.

So that leaves us with how to control mood swings…

How can someone control their mood swings?

Controlling our moods when triggers happen or when life events don’t go our way can feel hard to do, but there are a few things that can help!

Also, you may not be aware of it now but there are so many natural ways to control mood swings and uplift our spirits.

One way is by adapting your diet and exercise routine, which can influence your hormones in the body that are leading up to different emotions like anger or depression.

There are so many natural ways to stabilize your mood and we will be addressing the seven best mood-boosting habits to help boost your overall mood below!

7 mood boosting habits you need to develop now

7-Daily-Habits-to-Help-Boost-Your-Mood -- Everything Abode

1. Let natural light in.

We all know that being surrounded by natural daylight can lift our overall moods tremendously.

Pretty much most sunny days paired with a healthy active lifestyle are just plain awesome for our outlook in life!

However, on the flip side, it’s virtually impossible to have sunny days every day so here’s what happens if you are deprived of it…

Without enough natural sunlight, our serotonin levels drop, which is associated with seasonal affective disorder.

When this happens it deeply affects our daily mood especially if we live somewhere that doesn’t get enough natural sunlight or during the cold dark winter months

Natural sunlight helps to increase the release of serotonin, which is known as the happy hormone.

This hormone helps lift up our overall mood, as well as help us feel more focused and relaxed.

So if the sun doesn’t shine where you live? Open up those blinds in the morning still, and don’t forget to take vitamin D supplements.

Also if you need more assistance, consider getting a light therapy enhancer to lift your vitamin D deficient mood if not enough sunlight dampens most of your days.

2. Establish a consistent routine.

We all would like to be in a happy state every day but sometimes our schedules don’t allow for it.

That’s why establishing a daily routine (one you can stick with) will allow you to create a better habit of getting everything that you want to get done, done!

Plus, it’s also well known that sticking to a routine that you enjoy, is, of course, going to be a simple mood booster.

So how do you do this?  The trick to establishing any healthy daily routine is to know exactly what you want to do and follow through with it.

If you have no clue, that’s okay!

Start writing down what your morning dream routine looks like all the way down to how you would like to see your night routine look like.

Include all of the little tiny minuscule details that you see yourself accomplishing throughout your perfect day and try to follow a few things on the list.

Remember that consistency is a great mood booster in and of itself!

Even if you can’t manifest the whole dream routine right off the bat, at least you are heading in the right direction if you stay consistent with your efforts.

3. Exercise daily.

If you are feeling really low, then the next best thing that you can do to improve your mood is to get moving!

Know that with whatever exercises you choose, actively moving your body will help improve your overall mood or whatever has been bogging you down.

Moreover, moving your body is just good for the body, the mind, and your mental health because it usually gets out any aggression, pent-up energy, or anything that’s just been really bothering you!

So if you feel really lazy and or are stuck in how to start getting more involved with working out, another great idea is to get your hands on the Tabata app.  You only need five minutes for easy and fast workouts and to learn more check out 10 Lazy Girl Fitness Hacks to Exercise Easily Here!

4. Get outside & breathe the fresh air.

If you’re someone who can go the whole day without leaving the house? Just make sure it doesn’t turn into a daily habit, especially if you are someone who works from home

Oftentimes when it comes to enhancing our daily moods it can all come down to our lifestyles.

So does your lifestyle allow you to get outside and enjoy the fresh air?

If not, a free mood booster to help you turn that nasty mood around is to get outside and to get outside more often!

If you have a hard time getting outside then get your hand on an outdoor activity tracking app!

Outdoor activity apps are sort of like having a handy guide that’ll show you how much time you spent actively outdoors.

The app that I have and highly suggest is Sweat Coin

When you sign up, you’ll see that the app will only track your outdoor movement. It does not track your steps going to the bathroom, but only outdoor steps.

Plus you can earn sweat coins with every step you take and you can then use those sweatcoins to purchase goods promoted in their market which also sells health and wellness products!

You have to check out Sweatcoin if you haven’t yet. It’s free to join and you won’t regret it!

Whatever you do, get outside, breathe the fresh air, especially during the times when you’re feeling down and sad.

5. Hyper focus on a passion project.

It’s becoming more and more commonly accepted that to get the most creative, powerful, and worthwhile work done, it most usually involves some sort of passion.

That’s because when you attain a state of flow, simply by working on something that you love to do the most, it sort of becomes a mood-boosting activity that lifts your spirits all on its own.

So to turn your bad mood around, it’s highly advisable that you start fully immersing yourself in whatever you love to do the most!

Once you get into a wonderful and natural rhythm, you’ll just naturally start forgetting all about your worries.

And at the end of the day, all we need is a task that’ll renew us from within

6. Get a Full Night’s Sleep.

If you’re sleeping less than you need regularly, you’re asking for your body to perform under conditions that are very problematic.

Plus, when you are getting less sleep you’re also setting yourself up for disappointment virtually even before you start your day.

In fact, University of Pennsylvania researchers found that subjects who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep each night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted.

All of which, we can all agree, resemble a bad mood.

Moreover, experts are also beginning to recognize that working more and sleeping less is not the solution to living a happy and productive life.

They suggest that having good healthy sleep consistently will have exceptional benefits for your overall life because when the subjects from that research study resumed their normal sleep patterns, they reported a dramatic improvement in their overall mood.

A few tips to improve your sleep quality include:

    • Write down how many hours of sleep you get every night and when you feel the most relaxed and rested. If you do this you should have a better idea of how you’re doing after a week of logging your sleep down, and you’ll start noticing how much sleep you really need.
    • Be consistent. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends.
    • Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet. Sleep experts suggest that ideally, your room should be between 60 and 67°F (15.6 and 19.4°C).
    • Don’t nap. If you have to take a nap during the day, try to limit it to 20 minutes. Any more and your body will start rebuilding itself and that causes sleep disruption and extreme grogginess.

7. Eat mood-enhancing foods.
