9 Skincare Steps You Should Never Avoid
{this post contains affiliate links, see disclosure for details}
Skincare Step 1. Double-Cleansing.
If you treat your skin delicately, it will thank you. That’s why double-cleansing takes the first step to cultivating a beauty routine that works.
Since makeup wipes are too harsh to remove makeup anyway, instead, use cleansing oil to gently loosen up the makeup and debris from the day.
Even if you have oily skin, cleansing oils work wonders because you’ll be double-cleansing.
Once you’ve massaged the cleansing oil into your skin, rinse it all off with warm water. Then, cleanse your skin with your regular cleanser of choice.
When you’ve finished, beauty experts advise that you use a white washcloth to gently make sure everything is removed.
A double-cleansing ritual like this is one of the most effective beauty steps to include because it allows you to make sure nothing is left behind.

Skincare Step 2. Moisturizing Creams.
If you would love to maintain a clear complexion and shimmering skin, then it’s highly advised that you find a moisturizing cream that works for your skin type.
If you can also find creams that contain collagen and hyaluronic acid these two ingredients are always going to be great to include as well.
Beauty experts also advise that it’s perfectly normal to use a specific moisturizer in the morning and a different one at night.
As the colder seasons come, your skin requires more moisture as there’s less in the air, so use creams that meet both those needs.
It’s also wise to apply your cream while your skin is still damp from cleansing. That will help to lock in and secure any remaining moisture.

Skincare Step 3. Chemical Exfoliation.
This should be an old saying, but there is no beauty routine unless it involves exfoliating.
So when you’re ready to slough off dead skin, beauty experts advise that you need to maintain an exfoliating practice that happens at least once or twice a week.
At one point, the beauty industry experts encouraged the use of physical exfoliants like salt scrubs and sugar scrubs. Now, those are highly discouraged because of their ability to create micro-tearing on the skin.
You don’t want to overdo it though. That’s why your area of expertise is to focus on chemical exfoliation.
There are certain products that contain AHAs, BHAs, and other powerful acids that will aid in the removal of dead skin.
If you dread doing it yourself, it’s also a great idea to find an esthetician who can help you through the process with professional treatments.
Pay attention to what your skin responds to most, and treat it accordingly — with care during each exfoliation session.

Skincare Step 4. Get Good Rest.
Yes, getting good rest should be a part of your overnight beauty routine.
In fact, if you’d like to speed up the aging process, get less sleep because that’s one of the best ways to damage your skin.
A lack of sleep can lead to more fine lines and wrinkles. And as you get less sleep, your body can become more inflamed.
Since inflammation leads to a whole culprit of things such as acne, the breakdown of collagen, puffy bags, and dark under-eye circles — making sleep a priority is one of the best ways to maintain healthy-looking skin.

Skincare Step 5. Serums.
Serums are often associated with older women, but the best-looking skin needs a good serum no matter what age bracket you fall under.
Beauty experts highly recommend starting with a Vitamin C serum if you are new to using a serum treatment. Vitamin C serums are excellent for maintaining a rapid cell turnover rate.
When your cell turnover rate happens quickly, the new skin cells (activated by the serum) will create that radiant glow most people are looking for.
On another note, if you’re dealing with skin discoloration or an uneven skin tone, it’s also recommended that you keep a really potent skin serum that contains hyaluronic acid & vitamin E in your arsenal to correct it.

Skincare Step 6. Hydration.
Hydration is one of the most essential beauty steps that will never fail a woman who is looking for that youthful glow.
So, as above so below; as outside, so inside, from an internal perspective, make sure you’re drinking enough water on a daily basis and drink according to your weight.
This means you’ll want to drink half of your body weight in ounces. For instance, if you weigh 160 pounds, drink at least 80 ounces of water every single day.
You can also eat hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumbers to increase your water intake even more.
Watermelon is known to really help increase the circulation of blood which is essential for healthy skin.
While you are at it, eliminate dehydrating options like coffee and alcohol. And if you choose to drink either option, don’t drink them on a regular basis.
Treat them like occasional treats — since both are known to dehydrate and age the skin.
Now from an external perspective, be mindful of how dry the air is in your home. Purchase an air humidifier, and place it near your bed at night.
Your body loses water as you rest, so this step will help to replenish and hydrate the skin overnight.

Skincare Step 7. Proper Extractions.
Nobody really likes to talk about skin extractions but ideally, it’s great if you can see a professional esthetician that can take care of your extractions for you.
Unfortunately, there are times when you’re in a rush and need to get rid of that pesky pimple or simply it can be far out of our beauty budgets.
Since adult acne is a common issue, it’s best to know how to handle it when it persists.
If you have a pimple, don’t pop it before it’s ready. Don’t pick at it either. If you persist in picking at it, it’ll leave a scar long after it’s gone.
Once it seems as though it’s ready to come out, beauty experts highly advise that you steam the skin.
After thoroughly washing your hands, use a soft washcloth to pull your skin taut to release it without causing too much damage. You can also use a Q-tip for extra help.
Once the area is clean, it’s highly recommended that you use a medicated acne treatment as a salve in that area. The active ingredient in most of these treatments is benzoyl peroxide.
Once the treatment dries, use sunscreen and a discoloration treatment to prevent scarring.
Skincare Step 8. Sunscreen.
Even if you maintain an extensive list of steps for beauty, you’ll undo it by stepping outside without sunscreen. So sunscreen is definitely a non-negotiable in your beauty routine.
Many people underestimate the power of the sun’s rays. Even on a cloudy day, it’s essential that you wear your sunscreen.
If you’re suffering from skin issues like hyperpigmentation or melasma, avoiding sunscreen will make those skin issues more intense and pronounced on the skin.
It’s also highly recommended that you find a sunscreen that works for your skin type, then make sure it’s at the very least SPF 30.
To take it a step further, find makeup foundations and powders that come with SPF already in it.
There are plenty of tinted moisturizers with SPF on the shelves these days and if you can reapply some SPF at lunchtime, that will reinforce the protection of your skin from the sun.
Wearing sunscreen might sound like a step you can skip, but do not skip sunscreen application. Skin cancer is deadly and totally avoidable with proper care.

Skincare Step 9. Facial Masks.
Beauty experts advise that it’s also a great idea to do a mask once or twice a week, as a part of your at-home beauty regimen. If you can find the right mask it can serve as a deep treatment for your skin.
There are many beauty masks that can do wonders for your skin and the key is to find a mask that works for your skin type.
If you have dry skin, a clay mask won’t be what you want, you’ll want to use a hydrating face mask for your dry skin.
On the other hand, a clay mask is perfect for a woman with oily skin as it effectively pulls the excess oil and impurities beneath the pores.
When you find the mask that works for you, beauty experts advise that you should not overdo it by using them every day. You’ll wreak havoc on your skin if you do.
Another great insider tip is to focus on steaming your pores before you use a mask.
It’s important to make sure your mask gets under the surface. Then, once you’re finished using the mask, thoroughly cleanse the skin to make sure you’re left with clean, refined skin.
As you repeat this process on a weekly basis, you’ll give your skin the tender, loving care it deserves.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different products and treatments.
Read reviews to figure out which products, skin-replenishing foods, and systems will work best for what you need.
A woman who’s cultivating a beauty routine in her 20’s will have a much different routine than a woman who is in her 50’s.
Ultimately, once you find the right routine, stick with it. As you remain consistent in your efforts, you’ll achieve an undeniable glow for ages to come.
